Saving Money

Everyone likes to travel, but no one likes to spend more money than they have to. Here are some tips to save money when you travel:

Don’t Waste Your Reward Points

If you have a credit card that earns reward points, chances are you have racked up a bunch of them. Now’s the time to see what those points can do to help pare down your travel costs. You can use them to book travel for things like air tickets, car rentals and hotel rooms depending on the type of points your card supports.

Travel in the Off Seasons

Going places in the off seasons not only saves you money, but it will also be far less crowded. That means doing things like going on your holiday in the winter perhaps instead of the summer, depending on your location. For instance, Caribbean cruises are often cheaper in the summertime, or renting a cabin in fall could be cheaper than doing so in the summer. It will take some research, but you will reap the benefits of spending less.

Consider Last Minute Vacations

Go to places that specialize in booking last minute deals on vacations. Most places would rather lower their prices than be stuck with a lack of customers. For instance, cruises and hotel rooms often lower their prices at the last minute to ensure they will be full. There are also auctions where you can bid on last minute vacations. You can often save as much as 50 percent, you just have to risk not getting to go on the date or place you want.

Look for Free Events, Attractions

Do some research in the area you plan to travel to and see what there is to offer that’s free to do. Many times you can find things like a free day of the week at a zoo or museum, free lectures or concerts, maybe free crafts or story telling for the kids, or you could take a walk in a park and have a picnic, or window shop.

Don’t Eat in Restaurants

You can save a lot of money if you stay in a hotel room or other location where you can buy your own food and cook it in the room. Plus, many hotels offer a free breakfast. You can go to a local grocery and buy sandwich fixings and drinks and have a picnic. Have some fun and try looking for fruits or fresh breads at a local open air market, there are lots of ways to eat without going to fancy and pricy restaurants.

See if your Credit Card has any perks

Some credit cards have nice perks you can use on vacation that save you money as well such as free insurance if you use it to book your travel, pay for car rentals, etc. Call up your credit company and see what they may have, they could even have discounts for travel or travel related items.

All in all there are lots of ways to save money on travel.
